Before you buy a prom dress: Before going out and buying a prom dress, there are many things to take into consideration. However, these considerations vary depending on how serious you are about the upcoming occasion. One thing to keep in mind while choosing a prom dress, is the style. If you go all out, you probably wont be wearing that dress to other events. If money is a problem, then I suggest buying a dress you can get use out of in the future. To get an idea of the styles avaiable, visit your local stores, read magazines, and browse websites. This should help you narrow your search down to a few specific styles. Always allow extra time when ordering a prom dress, as the last thing you want is to pay for something that's late. The Dress and Yourself: Knowing yourself will help alot when choosing a prom dress. By this, I mean knowing what colors highlight your eyes, while still complimenting your skin and hair tones. Choose a style that is flattering for your body type, and focuses on your body's good points, instead of the bad. So make sure to know what your good points are, dont be shy. Avoid dresses with a lot of shine, as the shine reflects light and creates the illusion that you are larger then you really are. Darker colors do have a slight slimming effect, but remember you also want to compliment your existing tones. If prom dresses with very revealing or tight-cut lines are appealing to you, just keep in mind, the line between sexy and slutty is very fine. Co-Ordinate: So you've picked out the ultimate prom dress, the last thing you want is for your date's outfit to completely ruin your own. This is where co-ordinating colors comes in to play. When co-ordinating colors with a date it's important to not go overboard as this can be just as bad. Simple accents with similar hue, will usually do the trick. If you want to keep your prom dress secret until the big day, just let your date know enough details to co-ordinate with it. A little co-ordination can make a big difference. Dress Size: Don't let the media decide your dress size, let your body! The media these days has a very high impact on young people, and portrays the ideal body as slim and glamarous. If your body type doesnt match the media's ideal, don't worry, almost no one's does! When choosing a prom dress, dont choose a size too small for yourself, and plan on loosing weight before prom. Instead choose one or 2 sizes bigger, you can always get a seamstress to tighten it up when the time comes, if need be. Each companies size range varies, so its important to look at each one on a case to case basis. Prom Shoes: Finding the right shoes, is almost as important as finding the right prom dress. The wrong shoes could ruin the whole look. When shopping for shoes, personal style takes precidence of course, but theres a few things to keep in mind. The shoes should match, somewhat, the color of your dress. Make sure the shoes you choose will be comfortable enough to dance in all night without killing your feet. It's a good idea to try them on a few times beforehand and "practice" in them to make sure they are suitable for the occasion. If you end up going with sandals, dont forget that pedicure!
